Two paths, two very different realities
In South Florida, most people have access to a family pickup, know there is a U-Haul on every corner, and see moving company trucks every day. But few compare these options with real numbers before deciding. The wrong choice can cost time, money or damaged furniture.
Option 1: rental truck (U-Haul, Penske, Budget)
U-Haul has three sizes relevant for residential moves in South Florida:
- 10 feet: ideal for studios. Equivalent to a 1-bedroom apartment without large furniture. Rate: ~30 USD/day + 1.09 USD per mile.

A full-service moving company brings truck, crew, equipment, pads, straps, and handles the entire loading-transport-unloading flow. The crew is trained, insured, and the truck is dimensioned to your actual volume. For a 2-bedroom apartment in Miami you are looking at 600-1,100 USD depending on distance and access.

The driving factor: not everyone can handle a big truck
Driving a 20 or 26-foot U-Haul on I-95 during rush hour is described by many as "terrifying". Critical spots in South Florida include narrow 836 exits toward Brickell, low bridges in Miami Beach (Collins Avenue has several with height limits), and underground garages in Doral and Aventura buildings where a big truck simply does not fit.
If you have never driven a large vehicle, add 2 hours of anxiety and possible scrapes to your plan. Broken side mirrors on rentals are one of the most common extra charges.
Fuel and real efficiency
A 26-foot U-Haul gets about 8-10 miles per gallon. A Miami-Fort Lauderdale round trip (60 miles) burns about 7 gallons, around 25-28 USD just in gas. Add the mileage charge (65 USD extra) and the big truck starts to feel expensive at any meaningful distance.
Hidden costs of rental
The advertised rate is never the final price. Common extras include:

- Equipment rental (dolly, pads): 7-15 USD per item per day
- Damage coverage (Safemove): 15-30 USD per day
- Late return fee: equivalent to a full extra day
- Fuel refill penalty if returned not full
A "30 USD per day" U-Haul rarely ends up costing less than 120-180 USD in real-world conditions.
When each option makes sense
Rental truck: 1-2 bedroom moves, friends available to load, short distance within the same county, tight but not extreme budget, comfort driving large vehicles.
Full-service moving company: larger homes, interstate moves (Florida to Georgia, Florida to New York), families with children or seniors, professionals without time, moves with delicate or heavy pieces (pianos, safes, art).
The final math
For a typical 2-bedroom apartment move within Miami-Dade, the U-Haul wins on pure price. But once you add time, damage risk, physical effort and the chance of late fees, the gap with a professional company narrows quickly. For longer distances or bigger homes, professional movers win on almost every front except initial price.
