Cost to move a 1-bedroom apartment

Real 2026 costs to move a 1-bedroom apartment in Miami: hourly rates, total quotes, packing, stairs, condos and how to actually save money.

The short answer

In Miami-Dade in 2026, a 1-bedroom apartment local move with two professional movers, a truck, blankets and basic insurance typically costs between $550 and $950. Average customers pay around $720. That covers about 4 to 5 hours on site, transport across town and reassembly of basic furniture. Anything outside that range usually means a special situation: a building with strict rules, a long carry, full packing service, oversized items, stairs without elevator or a same-day booking during peak season.

How moving companies calculate the price

Most Miami moving companies use an hourly rate model. In 2026 the typical hourly rate for two movers and a truck is $110 to $160 per hour, depending on company reputation, insurance levels and equipment. Add a flat travel fee of $90 to $180 for the truck arriving and returning to base. Some companies bundle the travel fee, others itemize it. A standard 1-bedroom move runs 4 to 5 hours, so the math: 4.5 hours x $135 average = $607.50 + $135 travel = $742.50 plus tax. Larger or more complicated 1-bedrooms can reach 6 to 7 hours.

What is included in a base 1-bedroom quote

A standard 1-bedroom move includes two licensed movers, a truck appropriately sized (14 to 20 feet), moving blankets to protect furniture, shrink wrap for upholstered pieces, basic tools to disassemble and reassemble beds and tables, loading and unloading and basic liability coverage of $0.60 per pound per article (the federally mandated minimum, which is low, see insurance below). It does not include boxes, packing materials, packing service, storage, long carries beyond 75 feet, stairs surcharges or building access fees.

Apartment buildings and the COI fee

Most apartment buildings and condos in Miami (Brickell, Edgewater, Aventura, Doral, Sunny Isles) require a Certificate of Insurance from the moving company before they allow the truck to park or the movers to use the freight elevator. Processing the COI costs $25 to $100 depending on the building and how fast you need it. Some buildings also charge a move-in or move-out fee of $150 to $750 paid by the tenant directly to the building, separate from what you pay the mover. Always check your lease and building policy two weeks before your move.

Stairs, elevators and long carries

If your apartment is on a higher floor without elevator access, expect a stair fee of $25 to $75 per flight. Most movers charge this only for the third floor and above. If the freight elevator is reserved for someone else and you must wait or carry up regular stairs, that becomes hourly time. Long carries (when the truck cannot park within 75 feet of the apartment door) add $75 to $250.

Packing service

Self-packing is free but takes 8 to 15 hours of your time. Boxes and materials run $80 to $180 for a 1-bedroom (about 25 to 35 boxes total). Hiring a professional packer adds $250 to $450 to your bill and saves you a day of labor. Partial packing (just kitchen and closet) typically costs $120 to $250. The kitchen alone usually takes 2 to 4 hours to pack carefully because of glassware and small appliances.

Insurance: pay attention

Federal law requires interstate movers to offer two coverage options: Released Value Protection (free, $0.60 per pound per article, which means a 30-pound TV is covered for $18) and Full Value Protection (paid, typically $50 to $150 per $1,000 of declared value). For a 1-bedroom move with $15,000 in belongings, Full Value Protection costs around $150 to $300. We strongly recommend Full Value Protection or third-party moving insurance for moves with valuable electronics, art or furniture. Local movers are not federally regulated but offer similar tiers.

Long-distance 1-bedroom moves

If you are moving a 1-bedroom into or out of Miami over state lines, the price model changes. Long-distance moves are quoted by weight (estimated 2,500 to 4,000 pounds for a 1-bedroom) or cubic feet (350 to 550 cubic feet) plus mileage. Typical ranges in 2026: New York to Miami $3,800 to $6,500. Chicago to Miami $3,500 to $6,000. Los Angeles to Miami $5,200 to $8,500. Atlanta to Miami $2,400 to $4,200. These include loading, transport, basic insurance and unloading. Packing, storage and Full Value Protection are extra.

How to actually save money

Six strategies that work: 1) Move off-peak (October through April, mid-month, mid-week). 2) Declutter aggressively, sell or donate before the move, every cubic foot costs money. 3) Pack yourself but hire pros for the heavy lifting. 4) Get three written estimates, do not accept phone-only quotes. 5) Provide accurate inventory upfront, surprises on move day cost more. 6) Book three to six weeks ahead during peak season for the best availability and pricing.

Red flags to avoid

Walk away from any mover that demands a large cash deposit upfront, refuses to provide a written estimate, does not have a Florida IM license number (or USDOT number for interstate), quotes far below all others, uses a generic name with no permanent address or has many negative reviews specifically about price changes on move day. The Florida Department of Agriculture maintains a public list of licensed intrastate movers, verify yours.
